Single Storey Side Extension

Project type

Single Storey Rear Extension

Date

2018

Location

Sidcup, Kent

Located in Sidcup, a subtle yet transformative architectural gesture has unlocked the full potential of a modest suburban home. A single-storey side extension, simple in form but generous in spirit, reimagines the ground floor as a bright, fluid space centred around a modern open-plan kitchen and dining area. The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can reshape everyday living without overwhelming the character of a family home.

A Contemporary Shift in Scale

The extension slips neatly along the side of the house, occupying space that once felt residual and under-used. Its architectural language is deliberately restrained: clean lines, refined materials, and a calm, contemporary silhouette that sits comfortably within the established rhythm of Croft Way. From the exterior, the addition feels both respectful and quietly confident an evolution rather than a departure.

Life Around the Table

Inside, the extension’s impact is immediate. What was once a conventional, compartmentalised layout is now a generous sweep of open-plan kitchen and dining space a place where cooking, gathering, and relaxed family life intersect naturally.

The interior is shaped around daylight. Large-format windows and sliding or bi-fold doors create a visual axis toward the garden, turning greenery into a living backdrop throughout the day. The result is a space that feels expansive yet intimate, tailored for everything from quick breakfasts to lingering weekend dinners.

Light From Above

Rooflights punctuate the new ceiling, drawing soft, natural light deep into the floorplan and bringing a sense of calm openness to the heart of the home. As the light shifts throughout the day, shadows move gently across surfaces, giving the space a dynamic, atmospheric quality. This vertical illumination is one of the extension’s defining gestures—subtle, elegant, and transformative.

A Palette That Blends Old and New

Externally, the materials have been chosen to complement the existing house while giving the extension its own modern identity. Smooth render or matching brickwork works in harmony with slimline aluminium glazing, balancing continuity with contemporary refinement. The result is a home that feels cohesive from the street yet unmistakably updated in its rear and side elevations.

Inside, finishes are kept quiet and sophisticated, allowing the architecture and natural light to set the tone. Clean-lined kitchen joinery, uncluttered surfaces, and warm, tactile materials create an atmosphere of understated modern living.

Suburban Living, Reimagined

While modest in scale, the extension brings a substantial shift in how the home is used and experienced. It turns the side of the property into a vital part of the living environment, transforming what was once leftover space into a vibrant centrepiece of the home.

The architecture doesn’t shout. Instead, it works quietly and elegantly reshaping the ground floor, enhancing the home’s relationship with the garden, and offering a compelling example of how sensitive design can elevate everyday life.
